An Introduction to Osteoporosis

February 28, 2024

Osteoporosis develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decrease, or when the structure and strength of bone change for the worse. The name of this disease is Latin for “porous bone.” It makes bones brittle, weak and easy to fracture.

At the office of Ross Orthopedic Group, our skilled professionals are experts at diagnosing orthopedic issues as well as providing the treatment needed to maintain excellent orthopedic health. Your care and comfort are our top priorities. We will take as much time as you need to address your every concern and explain your options in care. Left untreated, osteoporosis can ultimately lead to numerous bone fractures. Spine and hip fractures are the most profound, as they can cause a permanent disability.

Symptoms

Early-stage osteoporosis usually doesn’t reveal them. But once osteoporosis sets in, your back might start hurting due to fractured or collapsed vertebrae. You might also start stooping forward. A fracture in any bone—a hip, wrist or the spine is most common—is sometimes the first indication, and it doesn’t take much of a physical impact. It can happen while climbing stairs, leaning forward or lifting heavy objects.

Who’s at Most Risk

Osteoporosis can occur at any age, but it’s most apt in people over 50, women, Asians, Caucasians and people with slight body frames. Women are four times more susceptible than men because they have much more estrogen, which helps build and protect bones. When women reach menopause, their estrogen levels drop precipitously.

Testing and Treatment

Your bone mineral density will be tested with an X-a central dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) X-ray. The result will indicate if your bone density is normal, or if you have mild bone loss (osteopenia) or osteoporosis. Your orthopedist can also prescribe a medication that inhibits bone loss or increases new bone. He may also tell you to consume more calcium and vitamin D and to exercise.
